Each year, approximately 9.5 percent of the American population suffers from depression. Depression is an illness that affects daily life and destroys families. It is a disorder that controls the mind and its functions causing loss of appetite, insomnia, mood swings, and a deep sense of despair.

Symptoms of depression are varied and gravity changes with time. And, according to experts depression can be an inherited disorder, or life or death caused by disease or stress. Other causes are certain type of diseases, medications, drugs, alcohol or mental illness. Women are more to suffer from depression than men and this is attributed to hormonal fluctuations, changes in the menstrual cycle, pregnancy, miscarriage, pre-menopausal and post-menopause.

Common symptoms are:

1. An unshakeable sadness, anxiety or emptiness.

2. Overwhelming hopelessness accompanied by pessimistic feelings.

3. Extreme guilt, feelings of helplessness, and no sense of self-esteem.

4. Loss of energy, a slowing of metabolism and activity levels. Being affected by constant fatigue.

5. A feeling of helplessness, along with a growing inability to concentrate and indecisiveness.

6. Loss of sleep and the development of extreme insomnia.

7. Unexplained weight loss or weight gain. Triggered by loss of appetite or binge eating.

8. Brooding and suicidal inclinations.

9. Irritability, short temper, and anxiety.

10. Physical ailments such as headaches, digestive disorders, chronic pain and no particular reason.

If you experience any of the foregoing, together with a marked change in behavior then do consult your doctor. He will give you a thorough examination to rule out physical causes of depression, as well as any medical problems. Then if necessary it is advisable to consult a psychiatrist or psychologist.

Try to relax, meditate, and enjoy music. Start new activities that absorb time and interest.  Make a decision to enjoy a movie, ballgame, family reunion, picnic or hike. Be positive, self confidence and have faith in yourself. Faith is itself a great healer. Decides to change his world for the better. But do follow the advice of the doctor. Treatment may include antidepressant medication, psychotherapy and lifestyle changes. In extreme cases, electroconvulsive therapy or light therapy are prescribed.

If your depression increases if you are suicidal or seek help from your family doctor or health care provider. Make a call to the local health department, a mental health center in the community or in hospital or clinic. Someone will extend a hand and talk through the crisis.
