A Look At Different Depression Treatment Regimens

May 8, 2009

One of the most prevalent health problem in many countries around the world is depression. In fact, researchers have concluded that most people experience clinical depression at some point in their lives. As a result, everyone should at least have a basic awareness of what depression treatment regimes are available in 21st. In fact, when it comes to treating depression, a number of different options available for people possibly affected by this debilitating disease.

If a person suffers from a mild, isolated case of depression, an effective treatment program can include depression, more sleep, better diet and increased exercise. In some cases, a combination of these resources has resulted in an effective treatment regimen for depression.

Many people are suffering through an episode of major depression. In such cases, a treatment for depression should include professional assistance. To consult with a health professional, a treatment program for depression, including therapy and medication or medications are likely to be recommended.

When a treatment program for depression, the drugs are useful to assist in reducing the symptoms commonly associated with depressive illness. Having said that, in most cases, it is important that a treatment of depression include therapy. Therapy is an important element of a treatment program for depression in many cases to help the afflicted patient with the discovery of the causes of depressive illness with which he or she is affected.

In some cases, a depressive illness is so severe that a treatment of depression include inpatient hospitalization. In most cases, a person who is hospitalized for a depressive illness is limited to a short period of time - as a matter of days. The purpose of the hospitalization as a treatment of depression in the 21st century is the stabilization of the patient. Long term treatment will be conducted on an outpatient basis. Long gone are the days (in most cases), in which stabilization and intensive treatment occurs while the patient is involved in a treatment program for depression in hospital.

In recent years, many professionals in the mental health care have begun to again defend the use of EST (electro-shock therapy) for patients who have a deeper depression. For a time in the 1970s and 1980s as a treatment option for depression EST was frowned upon by a large segment of the mental health professional community.

However, in recent years, techniques have been refined to EST and many doctors have come to see its beneficial results in patients who undergo a treatment regimen for depression, including EST. But, again, EST is used as a treatment option for depression, only a limited number of cases in which a patient’s depression is severe and constant over a long period of time. As with treatment programs for depression include medication, patients receiving EST participate in a course of therapy to try to discover the root causes of depressive illness.
