Adult Nocturnal Enuresis May Be Dangerous

When we think of people who wet the bed we usually visualize small children learning to use the bathroom or very elderly people who are unable to control their bladders. Surprisingly a good number of otherwise healthy young adults suffer from adult bed wetting. Healthy men and women who suffer from night time bed wetting are often too embarrassed to inform their doctor about this problem. There are two primary kinds of nocturnal enuresis - primary nocturnal enuresis and secondary nocturnal enuresis and the symptoms and treatments are different for each type. Not all men and women have the same kinds of bed wetting symptoms. Some sufferers have grown up wetting their beds all their lives, while some men and women later find themselves with a bed wetting problem after spending decades with no problems at all. This wetting of the bed randomly can be surprising at first. There are lots of various prevention techniques available for people who wet the bed at night.

Adults who wet the bed throughout the decades of their lives are could have physical ailments that are causing their bed wetting. Adults who have wet the bed all their lives are said to be suffering from primary nocturnal enuresis. Often adults who suffer from primary nocturnal enuresis are from families with a genetic history. Genetics can play a big role in an adult’s issues with night time bed wetting.

Another type of enuresis can sometimes be caused by stress, excessive alcohol consumption before sleep or a physical injury that developed later in life. Random occurrences of bed wetting are usually attributed to secondary nocturnal enuresis, which is also referred to as adult onset enuresis. This type of bed wetting is called secondary nocturnal enuresis and it is the phrase used to denote men and women who being having bed wetting issues later in life.

Bed wetting can often be the sign of a more serious medical condition. Though it’s an embarrassing problem for millions of adults, it’s important to not forget that wetting the bed is a symptom of something and not an actual illness unto itself. It’s estimated that 4.1 million adults suffer from some sort of nocturnal enuresis.
