And You Thought Yoga Was Just Stretching

April 16, 2009

While the way to find a friend of mine at the local YMCA, he asked me why not just join the gym and I explained that I practice yoga and calisthenics occasional exercises in my house and I really do not feel the need for a gym. His response was predictable: “… Yoga is not just that extends?”

I smirk in the knowledge of the matter and proceeded to explain to him the subject of this article. As I told him and those who do not know one thing: No, Yoga is much more than simply stretching or enter in search supposedly awkward poses and positions.

It is a combination of stretching, breathing exercises, meditation, and perhaps the most overlooked part, adherence to an adequate diet.

The word yoga, from the Sanskrit word yuj means to yoke or bind and is often interpreted as “union” or a method of discipline. His ultimate goal is the union of man with God or the universe in one breath. Another aim is to liberate the spirit and the mind and spirit are equally involved in their practice.

Yoga is the oldest existing system of physical culture in the world. Besides being a systematic and scientifically proven way to achieve physical fitness, slows aging, rejuvenates and improves the appearance, maintains flexibility and increases the vitality and the creative part of life.

With its fitness center warming known as the Sun Salutations (which are similar to the calisthenics exercise known as “burp”) raises investment, bending forward and back raises, balance exercises for the care and construction arms, the average practice will attest to the fact that to achieve fitness, yoga can be yours.

Think Yoga can not help with the construction of force? Think again. Heck, the challenge more adept coach to hold the simple but powerful turkey-account for 90 seconds straight. I bet you had an accident at the halfway stage in their execution if they do now.

Yoga also offers unique breathing exercises that are wonderful for patients with respiratory disorders and even singers and public speakers, in addition, with its unique pose of relaxation, often times during practice and after his execution, Yoga offers a systematic means deeply relaxing full body perhaps no other way to exercise. (Note, of course, that several of the poses to a deep body massage as opposed to those who did not receive in the halls … just thought I should throw that in.)

With a plethora of books, DVD’s, videos and classes that are offered for all ages, skill levels and experience (some of them are really free for the first couple of yoga classes to try out), I suggest you give a trial and see for yourself what you can do.

One thing I promise you is this, you leave his class and nod in agreement that in fact: “Yoga is much more than stretching.” It is the year.
