Anuloma-Viloma : Yogic Breathing For Better Health

May 4, 2009

Swami Kuvalyanand once said: “Yoga has a message for the human body, for the human mind and human spirit.” This is a truism that a healthy body is the first requisite for success and happiness in life. People are increasingly convinced that yoga makes for good health, joy and happiness in today’s stressful life and is not just an exercise regime.

In this article we will discuss Anuloma-Vilomar (alternate breathing) pranayama. Pranayama means simply correct “management” of the life force - prana. Although the basic principle remains the same, many different types of pranayama have been developed, each with its own technique. Anuloma-Vilomar or pranayama shuddhi nadi (nerve cleansing pranayama) is one of those guys and is considered one of the basic forms.

The practice of Anuloma Vilomar is like the template that controls the traffic on the roads, dealing with cleaning, beautification, etc, and keep traffic moving smoothly and efficiently. The method involves breathing in (pooraka) through one nostril and vice versa. Therefore this pranayama has the name anuloma Vilomar, ie alternating breathing.

For this practice, you have to sit in one of the yogic sitting postures. To start with, lead to the application of normal breathing Moola bandha (ie comfortable anal contraction). The maintenance of a stable Moola bandha, breath and breathing completely. Make sure the Moola bandha not loosened during the process. Pause for a time between sunset and breathing. Breathe deeply through the left nostril and exhale through the right and then aim through the right and through the left. Continue breathing this, ie, alternating left and right of the nose, one to three minutes.

After reaching a comfort level in this way, you can skip to the next stage. Close the right nostril with right thumb keeping the other four fingers together. Now, breathe slowly through the left nostril at a uniform speed. Repeat with the other nostril. While breathing in, raise your shoulders and chest with the ribs extending up. The lower abdominal region, however, should be seen in.

Benefits: the respiratory passage is cleaned and prepared well for this one other pranayama practice. Breathing becomes easier and regulated. The mind becomes the heartbeat and rhythm. It also helps in improving concentration, memory and other mental faculties.
