Combining Rest, Relaxation And Fun: How To Make The Most Out Of Your Vacation

February 12, 2010

Often the trouble that travelers have to deal with while traveling is the unmistakable lack of sleep. Contributing factors that mostly keeps you awake are packed hostel dorm room, unlimited invitations to party all night long or maybe the impulse to visit as much places as you can in just an insufficient period of time. Of course you can always make time for these socializing activities but always be aware to get enough sleep. Always keep in mind that one function why you head out for a getaway is to loosen up and delight yourself being in a new surrounding and not to look all beaten at the end of the day. What could be worse than returning to your place as a zombie?

Factors that gives you stress while roaming around the globe includes missing your stop, losing your way in a new spot, waiting for delayed flights, misplacing your luggage, etc. Don’t let having trouble sleeping be a part of it! Be in control! Try these tips that might help you catch some z’s.

1. Clear your nose. Flying can give you some level of sinus or ear discomfort if you often have nasal congestion most likely because of colds and allergies and these can also affect your sleeping schedule all night when these tend to cause obstruction on nasal breathing passageways. Use loads of nasal saline which acts as a mild decongestant which you can ready yourself or head out to the pharmacy to get nasal sprays or decongestant lozenges to avoid ear or sinus difficulties and open up these passageways.

2. Fight the urge to eat before going to sleep. Even though this can be a familiar habit whether you’re on a trip or just spending time at your place, this could very well ruin your plan to have a peaceful sleep. Apart from putting on more weight on you, when your stomach is full and you down, some of the stomach acids or juices regurgitate into your throat and cause inflammation and irritation. This will disrupt your rest and lessen the opportunities of having a good night’s sleep. It is urged to consume your grub 3-4 hours prior to bedtime.

3. Don’t even think about drinking yourself to sleep. Many people will instantly think that binge drinking would help them to have an improved rest as it conks them out but actually, you don’t get to nap early. And you have to know that it slackens throat muscles and when you happen to rest on your back, the collapse of your tongue would force it backwards obscuring your airway passageways. This would strip your brain of oxygen. Sometimes, when your body turns too limp to move a muscle, you can fall flat on your face and the air that comes in would be blocked and cause you to stop breathing. Isn’t that horrible enough? This is not to keep you from having fun on an casual pub crawling; just make certain that you know your limits and have time for everything.

4. Try to dope off early. It may be difficult, yes. Especially for self-confessed insomniacs or if you are just tempted to stay up late and make the most out of while on a vacation as it doesn’t happen everyday. But you must keep in mind that having your meals on time and going to bed before the break of dawn permit you to have a normal sleeping time that your body requires. Try not to shift and disconcert your body clock by going to bed late and jolting up from sleep much later the next day. It will be difficult to go back to your normal sleeping habits particularly when you shift through varying time zones around the globe.
