Effective Tools To Help You Quit Smoking

May 23, 2010

Are you as smoker? If you are, do you want to be? Smoking is an undesirable habit, one that many people see as being vile and disgusting. So where do you stand on the topic? Whatever your reason for wanting to quit, whether you are quitting temporarily or for good, quitting is not easy when it comes to an addictive substance like tobacco. This is why there are many tools for quitting smoking.

There are many tactics and products that can help you in your journey down the path toward a smokeless lifestyle. It is your choice whether you use one, some or all of them.

However you plan to quit, you should start by gradually lessening the intake of tobacco products in you body before you stop altogether. Nicotine is the addictive substance in tobacco products. So depending on how much nicotine your body is accustomed to receiving, stopping cold turkey could be very uncomfortable if you do not prepare yourself for quitting. Heavy smokers should try to reduce the amount they smoke per day. This could be a slow process and will depend on the strength of the withdrawal effects felt by the smoker while tapering off cigarettes. As soon as you are down to a pack or less per day, you are likely ready to start using some tools for quitting smoking.

Without a doubt, the most advertised tool for quitting smoking is nicotine gum. Nicotine gum is contains small amounts of nicotine. Because nicotine is the addictive substance in tobacco, you will suppress the addiction by chewing the gum. While nicotine gum tastes terrible, it is a nice way to substitute the nicotine found in tobacco and can be chewed anywhere as opposed to the act of smoking.

Another product that acts to supplement nicotine to prevent withdrawal symptoms is the e cigarette. Like the gum, it slowly releases small amounts of nicotine into your system. You inhale from this device just like a cigarette and it emits a harmless nicotine containing vapor.

There are tools for quitting smoking that have nothing to do with supplementing the nicotine of the cigarette with another nicotine product. There are also behavioral changes you can make to help you stop smoking. Most smokers will tell you that part of their addiction is to the act of smoking itself. The act of smoking is easily substituted with other acts. So if you find yourself craving a cigarette, you should try eating or chewing something like fruit, gum or candy. This will allow your mind to concentrate on the act of chewing rather than concentrating on the desire for a cigarette.

You can also try starting up some hobbies. Hobbies like knitting can be very soothing. You could also start up some sort of collection or if you are more into extreme activities you could try rock climbing. Such activities can be a good way of keeping your mind off of smoking.

Keep in mind, all of these tools will help you quit smoking. But if you do not have a strong desire to stop cigarettes, none of the tools will work. If you truly desire to quit, some willpower is all it takes to end your bad habit. Quitting will be one of the hardest things you ever do, but using some of these tools should ease the burden.
