Liposuction - A Basic Guide To This Sought after Operation

May 16, 2010

Parts of the body can be reshaped to look slimmer by removing accumulated fat through a tube by the use of suction in a procedure called liposuction. This is why it is also called “fat modelling”. If your body does not respond to conventional ways of slimming, you will probably need liposuction. The areas of the body that respond best to liposuction are the thighs, abdomen, buttocks, hips, chin, jowls, and neck. People often choose it for breast reduction because it does not damage the skin.

Regardless of the type of liposuction, the accumulated fat is always taken out of the body through a stainless steel tube. In one method, called tumescent liposuction, local anaesthetic is administered under the skin to the affected part of the body. The body part so treated becomes tumescent or swollen so that fat can be extracted with ease and without pain. In a process called ultrasonic assisted liposuction, sound waves are used to soften the fat under the skin before removal.

General anaesthesia is often regarded as an additional surgical risk and tumescent liposuction, which uses none, is regarded as the lowest risk surgery. The sub dermal blood vessels shrink as a result of the anaesthetic injection and and the loss of blood is reduced considerably. This permits micro-cannulae (very small diameter tubes) to be used. In other more conventional liposuction methods, the large diameter tubes allow the quick extraction of fat but may cause blemishes to the skin. Micro-cannulae have the advantage of allowing a smoother skin.

If you are not in good health and suffer from ailments such as diabetes or heart disease, avoid liposuction. If you are in good health with skin that heals quickly and you are not slimming despite all the exercise or the strict diet, you should try liposuction. All forms of surgery have some level of risk.

The biggest risk is the removal of too much fat or too many areas that are simultaneously treated. Research shows that needs are generally the cause of problems after surgery. Some people react negatively to the use of anaesthesia while there is always the danger of the All incisions can result in scarring. If the cosmetic surgeon does not stay attentive throughout the operation, he may damage the skin.

Always bear in mind that liposuction is not the end to your fat problems. After the liposuction, you should ensure that you stay healthy with exercise and a moderate diet so that you can keep those fat deposits away.
