Save Your Pet From Yeast Infection
August 16, 2010Dogs fall prey to yeast infection as easily as humans do. When the naturally present yeast Malassezia pachydermatitis grows and spreads beyond a limit, it causes yeast infection in dogs and cats. This could happen to your dog too; find out how you could prevent this problem or cure it.
What causes it?
At times, the resistance capacity of dogs is reduced due to repeated diseases or genetic factors. This could also be due to allergies; these cause excessive oil to be secreted from the skin of dogs. This makes it easier for yeast to breed.
Target areas
Infection normally occurs in places like ear canals, nose, rectum and urinary tract where microbes accumulate. Ears are by and large the first part to be affected by yeast infection in dogs.
What indicates yeast infection in dogs?
Just like in humans, yeast infection starts with an itch in dogs. Most dogs keep shaking their heads and scratching all over their body or a specific place that’s most affected. This scratching may lead to skin lesions and wounds. Sometimes, yeast infection may set off a fever. Excessive drooling could be an indicator of yeast infection in the mouth. This problem could cause ear problems, thickening of skin and loss of hair in dogs.
How to detect this problem in dogs?
This ailment can be diagnosed through a swab taken from the affected part of the skin or through a urine test. These are lab tests; so it’s best to consult your vet if you think your dog has yeast infection.
Ways to treat it
Your vet will suggest shampoos that contain benzoyl peroxide or salicylate. When there’s too much infection, Prednisone is recommended. Washing your dog’s skin with well diluted vinegar can also be effective. Switch over to a raw met and bones diet as soon as your dog gets infected. Avoid giving your dog food containing grains and potatoes. Including yogurt in the daily diet is also an effective way to fight yeast infection.
Ear infection in dogs, if not attended to, can cause the infection to spread to inner ear and make your dog deaf. There are also several natural cures available for this disease; if you don’t want side effects, you could opt for them.
