Scar Removal Options for the Average Joe

May 6, 2010

Trying to heal scars caused by wounding and skin issues like acne and other skin infection is occassionally linked to very expensive medical procedures such as laser scar treatment or other surgical scar removal methods. Even though such procedures may indeed be more effective, there are alternatives that may be as effective that does not necessarily have to cost as much.

But before we enumerate these cheaper yet effective options, we must first understand about the bogus methods being sold in the market.

There are literally thousands of very accessible products out there but majority of them does not have any clinical proof to back up their claims.

Creams based on vitamin E - there are literally a host of products out there that are based on vitamin E and claim to do some good in the fight against scarring. Unfortunately, though, scientific facts point to an unfavorable proof that these products are not effective in what it claims to do. Furthermore, they may even cause bad effects in that they could cause allergic reactions about 30% of the time. One benefit that vitamin E provides is that it is a good moisturizer but it does nothing to help get rid of scarring.

Onion extracts creams - these topical applications are some of the more often cited scarring solution and one of the most popular brands is known as Mederma. However, a clinical trial performed to learn whether this class of anti-scarring products work indicated that it simply does not and evidence suggests that it just works just as well as any petroleum lubricant that can be found in stores. It is pretty safe to use though unlike vitamin E creams which entails some risks of allergic reaction.

Other products based on natural ingredients such as cocoa butter, aloe vera, lime juice, cucumber are likewise being sold out there to be a substitute solutions to scarring problems but neither of them have been tested clinically to prove their claims.

But there is another option to us that utilize silicone as one of its ingredients, either in silicone sheets, gel or cream and they have demonstrated superb performance in treating scars especially for severe cases like keloidal and hypertrophic formations. The good thing is that there have been scientific studies that show the helpfulness of this method and so this type of treatment has been pushed as one of the best anti scarring methods out there right now.

Silicone sheeting is ideal since it is not invasive and is quite painless and most especially, relatively cheaper compared to other effective options. This approach is especially more effective if applied early in the wound healing process and is a well accepted method in treating burn injuries.

Effective scar removal does not have to be as inconvenient as most other surgical option because there are non-invasive methods that are showing pretty good results such as the silicone sheeting treatments.
