How Backache Begins

September 4, 2011

Back ache can start from seemingly very inconsequential origins and it may come from significant trauma. People should be made to be aware that small things could lead to years of backache and maybe early retirement.

In my case, my wife and I were visiting a friend of hers and she offered to give me a massage. My wife agreed because of their friendship and because her friend had trained as a masseuse ten years before.

The massage progressed well and she kept asking me whether she was hurting me. She was not, therefore I said no. She stood on the rear of my thighs and asked again. I said no. She said that she had never massaged a white man before and that my muscles were tighter than she was used to.

So, she began kicking the back of my left thigh with her heel. Again she asked if it was painful. It did not. Anyway, she finished the massage and we all had a nice evening. The next day, my left thigh was painful and I had to limp a little. This lasted a couple of of days and then went away.

A week later, I could scarcely walk, limping badly on my left leg. That lasted a month and then my lowest disc slipped out of place. I am still suffering from a slipped or herniated disc as a result of a month of bad posture which was the result of a free massage.

That is how easily it can occur. You do something daft like wearing tight shoes; you acquire a limp and the limp so alters your stance that it puts your back out. If I had known then what I know now, I would not have limped around for a month, I would have rested up.

Take my instance as a serious warning, you can acquire permanent back pain from the stupidest of reasons. A friend of mine has had back ache for thirty years and he remembers the day it happened. He was in the bathroom and twisted to his right to reach for the toilet paper.

Bang! Thirty years of back pain and early retirement.

Be very careful of lifting, pushing and manoeuvring items in general. If your work involves physical work, make sure that your employer or supervisor shows you the safest ways of doing so. Make certain that you use the same ways at home in your private life.

A last suggestion is to remember that we are living longer than ever before, but that means that bones have been wearing out for longer. Bear that in mind, if you are getting on. You might no longer be able to do what you could do merely 10 years ago even if you are healthy.

Help your body live longer without injury by exercising it and giving it at least the recommended daily amounts (RDA) of vitamins that it needs to renew itself.

Are Medical Cannabis Card Patients Faking?

August 27, 2011

Prior to marijuana experiencing prohibition in 1937, it was a significant part of the US pharmaceutical market. It was commonly prescribed in the early 1900’s, because at that time it wasn’t on a controlled substance list.

After the 1937 Marijuana Tax Act, cannabis was not truly illegal but placed under heavy taxation. The US pharmaceutical market grew tired of these taxes, so within 4 years cannabis was removed altogether from the market. It became illegal to prescribe in the 1970’s once it became a Schedule 1 narcotic.

Medicinal marijuana is now legal in 16 states for various qualifying conditions. California maintains the most lax rules for the conditions medical marijuana may be recommended and ID cards received. With regards to outright legalization, 46% of CA voters actually said yes. Medicinal marijuana has actually been legal in CA since 1996.

In a recent survey of close to 2000 patients at multiple CA marijuana evaluation clinics, there was an interesting array of conditions patients maintained. Thirty one percent had chronic pain in the back, spine, or neck, with sixteen percent having a sleep disorder. Anxiety and depression amounted to thirteen percent. Eighty percent of these patients reported trying traditional medications (typically opioids) prior to marijuana.

The fact they were using traditional prescription medications might argue against a patient faking, but even those individuals can trick the system to acquire narcotic prescriptions. The individuals were then asked if they had smoked marijuana recreationally before receiving medical cards, with forty percent saying yes. Studies have interestingly shown that about thirty percent of opiate patients sell or trade their prescriptions with the numbers spanning all socioeconomic classes.

Most legal states require a medical record review along with an in person physical exam prior to approving a card. If for example a patient has Crohn’s disease in a state that has legal medical marijuana for it, then some medical records should exist for it. If there are none, a workup should start to make sure the disease is present prior to medicinal marijuana approval.

So it is not exactly clear how many medical marijuana patients are faking. Based on the CA survey, we do not have a clear number. Considering the sheer number of patients in the US who doctor shop for narcotics and become illegitimate patients, if it’s any way equivalent the number may be over 20%. This is speculation.

One thing, however, is certain. Despite the illegitimate individuals receiving medical marijuana cards, it is also evident that medicinal marijuana represents a valid treatment compared to some of the traditional treatments that exist for several conditions. Less side effects exist and often an ability to reduce the more harsh side effects of conventional medications by dropping dosage.

Yeast Infection Warning Signs - You May Or May Not Recognize Them

August 16, 2011

Candida yeast is thought to be the cause of yeast infection symptoms, by most people. Candida albicans is only the most common, but with more that 20 different types, what people think has a lot of truth in it.

Every year millions of people are affected with Candidiasis, which is what the condition is called. What makes the condition so hard to treat, is that anyone can get it, no matter what, because of many reasons. One little known fact is that yeast is a fungus that can be found anywhere on your body. For yeast to run rampant in your body, you need to be unhealthy.

For the over-growth of yeast or fungus, to occur, certain other things must happen. A skin infection by Candida will take on the appearance of a rash that is reddish and simply looks flat. You will find edges that are sharp and have scalloped texture when you check your rash. Near the primary rash, you might also find some smaller rashes. A type of nonspecific condition that is common among women is vaginitis, the inflammation of the vagina. A yeast infection could cause this known condition, but on the other hand, it could be something else. The vaginitis condition could be the result of bacterial infections that involve the vagina. Also, another infection totally unrelated to the above is attributed to a protozoa which is a microscopic organism that is not a bacterium or a fungus (yeast).

With an infant you will need to determine if it is a yeast infection on the skin, or just a diaper rash.

But as most parents probably know, this condition can be successfully treated with OTC (over-the-counter) medications. Treatments that are effective, can be purchased in lotions and creams, in addition to powders. These conditions should respond favorably to treatment. A prescription medicine from your doctor could be necessary, if the condition hasn’t improved within a week or two. Successful treating Candida is a must, because it can make you feel miserable. When the condition is allowed to continue, the results can end up being severe complications that are significant. Symptoms of yeast infections can be contracted by any person, even though the majority of people may not even know what yeast is. The symptoms of yeast infections are many and varied, so learning how to deal with them should be important to each person. Infections can happen more often for you, if you are a member of various groups who are at greater risk. Having a weakened immune system will always put you at risk for further medical conditions like HIV or diabetes, or yeast infections.

To be sure you are safeguarded against medical issues such as this one, be sure you possess adequate medical health insurance. Seek advice from insurance companies to learn more.

Imaging Studies Don’t Always Match Up With The Pain From Degenerative Disc Disease

August 7, 2011

Degenerative disc disease is a problem affecting millions of Americans. It is never fatal and surgery for it is not absolutely vital. The discs between the vertebra (intervertebral discs) in the lumbar spine provide an extremely important cushioning function. Between each vertebra there is a disc which consists mostly of water and collagen. These discs cumulatively permit substantial range of motion. Think of all the different directions you can twist and turn.

As a person ages, interestingly, they progressively lose water. It does not get replaced fully so the intervertebral discs start to get dehydrated and lose height. Most body parts and organs in humans have an active metabolism. For example, in the mouth mucosal cells get replaced weekly, and the CSF gets replaced numerous times a day.

The intervertebral disc maintains a very slow metabolism which comes with a very limited healing capability. A study has been done evaluating patients in their 30’s and 40’s and their incidence of DDD. Interestingly, of patients in their 40’s over 40% have signs of degenerative disc disease on MRI and none of them had back pain at all.

So just having a degenerative disc(s) on MRI does not mean a patient will have back pain. A patient may have severe pain with only slight evidence of DDD or it could be vice versa. One of the concomitant conditions patients may be dealing with is facet syndrome. The spinal disc is in the front area of the spine, and the facet joints are in the back. If a person’s disc is dehydrating and losing height, the facet joints may start to see abnormal amounts and type of motion. This may lead to arthritis and pain in these joints.

With degenerative disc disease and low back pain, the facet joint should be checked for arthritis. That may be difficult to establish. A diagnostic injection into the area by a pain doctor around the joint may help to see if the facet joint is in fact painful.

Unfortunately, no such diagnostic injection exists for the intervertebral disc. A patient may undergo a procedure called a discogram which may help diagnose if the disc itself is the source of the patient’s pain. Fluid is injected into the disc to see if it reproduces the pain that the patient has on a daily basis. If it does, the disc itself can be assumed to be causing the patient’s pain.

Degenerative disc disease surgery currently consists of 2 options. One is to perform an artificial disc replacement, the second is a spinal fusion. In 2004 the FDA approved artificial disc replacement for the lumbar spine, and the hope was it would be a veritable new frontier for DDD. So far, that has not been the result. Good results have been about 70% good to excellent for both procedures.

The bottom line here is that low back pain from degenerative disc disease does not always correlate to the degree of the degeneration seen on imaging studies. The patient’s subjective complaints are more important than the MRI.

High Blood Pressure - More Than 65,000,000 In U.S. Have It!

July 31, 2011

Introduction

High blood pressure or hypertension refers to high pressure (tension) in the arteries. It does not mean overly excessive emotional tension, although emotional tension and stress can increase blood pressure temporarily. Hypertension normally has no symptoms, but it can create serious problems such as stroke, heart failure, heart attack and kidney failure. It causes the heart to work a lot harder and can harm the arteries, causing them to narrow a lot faster. It can also damage other parts of the body and is a major health problem in North America affecting 33% of Americans, according to the American Heart Association (AHA).

Hypertension

Hypertension, aka “high blood pressure”, HTN or HPN, is a medical condition in which the blood pressure is chronically raised and is assumed to be present when a person’s systolic blood pressure is consistently 140 mmHg or higher, and/or their diastolic blood pressure is consistently 90 mmHg or higher. It can be classified as either primary or secondary and is one of the most common complex disorders, with genetic implications averaging 30%.

Hypertension can be a temporary or life time ailment, depending on the cause and is dangerous because it causes the heart to work much harder. Pre-hypertension is high blood tension between 120 and 139 for the top number, or between 80 and 89 for the bottom number. For example, blood pressure readings of 138/82, 128/89, or 130/86 are all in the pre-hypertension range. If your blood tension is in the pre-hypertension range, it is more likely that you will end up with hypertension unless you take preventative action. Should you have this kind of hypertension, you may not need to take medication.

Heart

Many people may not be aware they have HBP until they have problems with their heart, brain, or kidneys. If it is not found and treated, it can cause the heart to get larger, which can lead to heart failure. With HBP, the heart works harder, your arteries take a beating, and your chances of a stroke, heart attack, and kidney problems are increased. If you don’t have hypertension by age 55, you have a 90 percent likelyhood of developing it at some point in your life, according to the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute. Left untreated, it will cause the heart to eventually overwork itself to the point at which serious damage can occur. About 50% of people having first-time heart attacks and 67% of people having first-time strokes suffer from HBP.

Did you know, laughing heartily 100 times every day gives the same cardio results as exercising for 20 minutes?

Treatment

Therapy is focused on reducing water retention and lowering HBP to the normal range. When you first commence treatment, your MD may need you to come to the office regularly. Your MD will review the data with you and decide if your treatment plan is working or if you need to change it. Among the 61 percent who are under treatment, only 35 percent have their blood tension adequately controlled. For specific medical advice, diagnoses, and treatment, visit your MD.

Conclusion

Hypertension is called the silent killer because it usually produces no symptoms and is a risk factor for heart and kidney disease and stroke. HBP does not occur evenly throughout the population and occurs disproportionately more often in minority communities. High blood pressure rates are also rising among US children, alongside an epidemic of obesity. Hypertension in adults will usually be measured on at least 2 different MD visits before a diagnosis can be made. It can be treated with both lifestyle modifications, usually as the 1st step, and, if necessary, with medications. Diuretics work in the kidney and flush excess water and sodium from the body. Nearly one third American adults have high blood pressure. Once It begins, it normally lasts a lifetime. Fortunately, it can be easily diagnosed, and once you know you have it, you can work with your MD to control it.

The importance of diabetes specialist nurses

June 12, 2011

Cases of diabetes are increasing to unprecedented levels, and, at the same time, the spectre of impending reforms looms portentously over the NHS. Charity Diabetes UK is taking the lead in highlighting the dangers of ignoring the diabetes problem during any process of any organisational change. It has undertaken an audit of diabetes provisions at UK hospitals (a project known as Diabetes Watch) and has reported that, already, there are three hospitals in the UK that don’t have any diabetes specialist nurses to care for inpatients.

Barbara Young, chief executive at Diabetes UK, has expressed concern that there is evidence of a decrease in the number of nurses specialising in diabetes treatment on the frontline. This is a particular concern when the number of people being diagnosed with diabetes is rising, and when diabetes can have the same effect on the risk of someone dying as living in poverty (as reported in a recent study undertaken at Edinburgh University).

There is no shortage of evidence proving that diabetes specialist nurses (DSNs) play an important role in making sure patients get the right medication, keeping hospital admissions down, and reducing the length of time those patients admitted to hospital have to remain there.

NHS Trusts are ignoring warnings and failing to consider the long-term implications of their decisions for patients, according to Dr Peter Carter, chief executive and general secretary of the Royal College of Nursing. With the Government’s Spending Review threatening to hit the NHS with massive cuts to its budget, there are fears that 10% of specialist nurses may be made redundant.

Patients rely on specialist services, and these services, delivered properly, should keep hospital beds free - something which is desirable both in economic and clinical terms.

Stay up to date with all the latest diabetic news.

Tinnitus Homeopathic - Homeopathic Treatment For Tinnitus

June 9, 2011

1 of the direct outcomes of today’s modern electronics use (iPods and supplementary mp3 music players) is hearing diminishing in folks considerably younger than was the norm numerous decades ago. Tinnitus Homeopathic

According to Robert Novak, director of clinical education in audiology at Purdue University, “We are seeing young folks that have a head commence on the hearing aging procedure,” Novak said. “They are losing some sensitivity that we wouldn’t see until the 30, 40 and 50-year-old decades.” And, together with the trauma of hearing loss because of excessive noise, comes tinnitus.

Tinnitus, pronounced “tin-night-us,” which is Latin for “ringing” is just that - a ringing inside the ear(s) that only the tinnitus sufferer can hear. The vast majority of new tinnitus cases present as “subjective,” meaning that only the person suffering from the ringing and whistling noises can hear them. While the mechanism that creates these noises is fairly complex and still open to debate, most experts are in agreement that, for most folks, their tinnitus was caused by loud noises that may have damaged sensitive parts of the inner ear.

For the majority of tinnitus sufferers, there’s no medical cure. Numerous option treatments have been developed over the years by frustrated tinnitus sufferers ranging from sound feedback devices to modifications in one’s diet to homeopathic treatment for tinnitus. Although many tinnitus sufferers do get relief from a homeopathic treatment for tinnitus, some do not and need to seek relief elsewhere. As is my theory on these alternative treatments for tinnitus, people need to have an open mind to different treatment alternatives, and should be willing to experiment - a homeopathic treatment for tinnitus can definitely be an excellent location to start. Tinnitus Homeopathic

Although there are numerous sellers of homeopathic remedies for tinnitus, most have numerous typical ingredients that have been proven to offer relief to some tinnitus sufferers. My guidance: compare ingredients and shop for price and high quality. Here are a few of the ingredients you should be searching for in a homeopathic treatment for tinnitus.

- Calcarea carbonica. Calcarea carbonica is impure calcium carbonate, basically made from the middle layer of shells. Obtain Relief and Never Be Bothered with External Hemorrhoids

April 30, 2011

External hemorrhoids are very painful just like and other hemorrhoids that you may suffer from. Discomfort may also be experienced as one sits down, but there are some things that you can do if you want to be relieved of the pain that it can bring you.

You are sure to know when you have this medical condition because it is easily locatable and visible without much poking and probing around your rectum and anus. Usually, the strangulated lumps are found in the anal section.

As with other conditions, there are some measures that one can undertake to obtain relief from the problem.

Getting a warm bath

Those extremely bothered by their external hemorrhoids can use a warm bath. This is the easiest way of getting relief from this cause because you can do it anywhere. If you are staying in your home or in any hotel or some other person’s house, you can always take this measure to lessen the pain from your external hemorrhoids.

To do this, one needs to simply keep the area soaked in water for about ten to fifteen minutes everytime they take a bath. Even without taking a bath, this procedure may also be done. What you need is a tub filled with lukewarm water and dip the area where you have a problem by sitting. It actually lessens the pain and discomfort while it speeds up the healing process.

Controlled dieting

This is another very useful process when it comes to taking a break from your external hemorrhoids. It does not only eliminate the external hemorrhoids but also prevents it from coming back. As always, eating good food brings us good health.

Maintaining some control over what you are eating is sure to keep you away from this condition. You must eat high fiber foods and drink more fluids. Fibers will help clean your system and anus properly while fluids will ensure better absorption of nutrients. Flushing of the toxins must be done if you want to remove the external hemorrhoids.

Hence, you must take note of these two major things if you intend to eliminate your external hemorrhoids and be free from it for a longer period of time. Believe me, I felt the pain and it certainly is no joke, so it would be better if you take measures to avoid it.

Another aspect that you will have to pay attention to is your personal hygiene since a clean person will remains healthy. Putting ice packs in the area affected, preventing prolonged sitting down, with good hygiene helps in offering relief from the external hemorrhoids.
