Knowing More About Carpal Tunnel Pain
November 9, 2011When you have an injury, disease or any emotional disorder you will feel pain and it is an unpleasant feeling, suffering and distress. You can feel the carpal tunnel pain on your wrist or hand. You can find the carpal tunnel within your wrist and it is here where you can find your median nerve and flexor tendons.
The one that connects your brain and your spinal cord to the other parts of your body is the nerve which is a fiber. It generally transmits impulses to and from the brain and spinal cord. The branching figures that will bring the nerve impulses from the organs to the brains are called dendrites. Axons are the ones who bring nerve impulses from the brain to the spinal cord and be delivered to the cells to create reaction. The ones that provide the functions, feelings and movements are the nerves and the muscles, and this is also the functions of the median nerve.
Repetitive movements of hands, medical conditions and other biological factors are the reasons why the median nerves are being compressed and this would lead to carpal tunnel syndrome. Ligaments and tendons of your wrists will become damaged and will cause inflammation or swelling.
Those who have this condition will feel pain generally in the wrists, thumb and the first two fingers of the hand. Tingling and numbness of the wrist and hand usually happens at night. Some cases will result to weakness and loss of function of the affected hand or wrist. There would be a difficulty in holding or grasping objects and also forming a fist.
If your condition gets worse, the pain will start to radiate to the arms and fingers. You will start to feel a burning sensation in your fingers and arms. If this continues to go on, you will lose sensation of your fingers and eventually your thumb will be weak. You will not be able to distinguish the temperature of things if they are hot or cold.
Pain is described in different ways by each person once they acquire carpal tunnel syndrome. Some of them may describe it as an intermittent pain because they only feel it when they do something with the use of their hands. Others describe the pain as continuous that can be felt on their thumb and wrist and it always gets worse during night.
A sharp shooting pain may be felt by some that goes up to the forearm that feels like it’s taking your breath away. But some of them only feel the pain from time to time and sometime it feels like the hand is in normal condition. The pain could really make you feel very tired and irritable.
You might make a mistake in distinguishing carpal tunnel syndrome from repetitive strain injuries like tendonitis, because they have the same pain location, severity and characteristics but the area of injury is different. There are now many diagnostic procedures that you can do to be able to know your real condition.
You can choose from different treatments and remedies to help you reduce the pain that you are experiencing. Examples of those are exercises, acupuncture, yoga, chiropractic manipulation and taking pain medications that your doctor prescribed for you. You may also put ice on the swollen or inflamed part. These remedies and treatments may help you to reduce the pressure on your median nerve.
After you do all the remedies and the treatments and still the pain is still there and it becomes worse, surgery should be done immediately. Pain is still present after the surgery, so you have to do some pain management about it.
You will still experience pain after the surgery mainly because of the tissue that has been damaged. Your doctor will still prescribe non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs to reduce swelling and pain. You may also do deep breathing exercises to alleviate the pain. Another thing is you may also consult a physical therapist for you to perform exercises to improve the function of your hands and also to deal with your pain.
