Cordyceps sinensis - Medicinal Mushroom for Stamina and Strength

September 20, 2011

From high elevations of the Tibetan plateau comes a minute fungus known as Cordyceps sinensis. It parasitizes on caterpillars and sprouts out of their dead carcasses. [1] With 95% of the world’s mushroom species still undiscovered, it’s a small wonder that a tiny fungus from a remote and sparsely populated area is not only described but revered the world over as one of the most highly prized medicinal mushrooms on the planet.

The extreme unlikeliness of this remote, rare, and insignificant fungus’s claim to fame speaks volumes in and of itself as to its value and potency.

Cordyceps extract has been valued in China for almost two thousand years as an aphrodisiac and general vitalizing tonic. The first recorded mention of Cordyceps extract appears in the Chinese work The Classic Herbal of the Divine Plowman from about 200 A.D. [2] Modern works have reaffirmed its traditional wisdom. [3]

Contemporary researchers in Asia have discovered that Cordyceps sinensis demonstrates anti-tumor and immune-enhancing qualities. [4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12]

Four studies have indicated that Cordyceps may be useful in treating leukemia. [13, 14, 15, 16] The U.S. National Institute of Health began Phase I screening of the compound cordycepin in the treatment of leukemia in 2002.

Affirming the traditional Chinese use of Cordyceps as an aphrodisiac, a modern trial found a 64% improvement in men with erectile dysfunction. [17] A possible explanation for this effect may be that Cordyceps helps dilate blood vessels, as demonstrated by two other studies. [18, 19]

Cordyceps extract also appears promising for cardio-vascular health by reducing cholesterol and acting as a general cardiotonic, [20] as well as aiding the kidneys [21] and liver (post-hepatitic cirrhosis). [22]

However, Cordyceps’ popularity is primarily based on its effect on physical empowerment by helping to increase stamina and endurance. [23, 24, 25] Part of the explanation to this may be, as mentioned earlier, that it has an effect on improving blood-flow by dilating blood vessels. Another reason may be the similar effect it has on also helping to dilate respiratory passageways, which was demonstrated by two studies on bronchitis and asthma. [3, 26]

Nine Chinese women who set world records at the 1993 Chinese National Games attributed their success to their use of Cordyceps extract. [27, 28]

Cordyceps extract is a confirmed source of anti-oxidants, [29] polysaccharides, and a large host of other newly discovered nutritional compounds, [8, 30, 31] plus certainly many others that are yet to be discovered.

Simple Key Facts Of Homeopathy

March 4, 2010

Homeopathy is based on fundamental principles that are followed in trying to develop remedies aimed to treat a variety of ailments and diseases. These principles make the practice of homeopathy a distinct system of alternative healthcare. Here are some of the basic principles known to the practice of homeopathy.

Law Of Similars The main basis for which homeopathy was eventually developed, the Law of Similars states that similar symptoms caused by certain substances on healthy people associated with certain diseases may be effective in using it for treatment. Through the Law of Similars, homeopathic practitioners may be able to find a remedy for ailments by means of identifying the symptoms that they may present similar to what actual diseases may present.

Curative Power Of Life Homeopathy is also based on the same philosophy that life itself has the power or the ability to cure. It is through unlocking the healing power of substances found in nature that becomes the calling of homeopathy.

Energy As Medicine Life in homeopathic philosophy is considered as a vital force that has its own inherent energy. Everything that lives has its own energy. These energies exist in balance and harmony in nature. But certain circumstances may lead to certain imbalances that may disturb the harmony between these energies. It is through this that homeopathic medicine believes will lead to diseases. Homeopathic remedies then aim to restore the balance of the vital force that is life.

Less Is More Homeopathic medicine is also governed by the Principle of Minimum Dose. It is based on the belief that the least possible action may be enough to necessitate any change in nature. Through this principle, homeopathic remedies are developed using extreme dilution of substances in such a way that the beneficial effects still remain while removing all the other harmful effect associated with the substance.

Individualism The practice of homeopathy is also based on the fact that each person is unique, completed by the integration of the person’s various characteristics. Homeopathic treatments take into consideration the whole person’s being- the physical, emotional, spiritual and mental aspects- to become more effective. This leads to developing remedies usually distinct and unique to different individuals.

Obstacle Removal Since diseases are caused by certain imbalances and disharmony in the vital force, the practice of homeopathy also deals with trying to remove the obstacles that may be impeding the healing process. Such obstacles may be drugs, stress, diet, as well as other environmental, spiritual and emotional factors. It is up to homeopathic practitioners to aid people in trying to determine and identify what these supposed obstacles may be in their lives.

Buy Muira Puama Herb: Keep You Healthy

February 24, 2010

The subject of natural herbs for depression/herbs for depression is one that sparks heated debate in certain medical circles. Herbal treatments for depression are considered alternative. The label alternative is defined as when the treatment in question is not widely accepted as effective by conventional mental health experts and medical professionals or the treatment is not the first choice of most doctors in cases of depression.

There are numerous prescription medications available to treat anxiety panic attack. Four of the most popular”families” of medications used in anxiety and treatments are Benzodiazepine, Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs), Tricyclic Antidepressants and Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors [MAOI].

There are many different herbs used in natural health formulas. Some of the names often seen are St. John’s wort, Kava, Ginkgo biloba, Basil, Black Hellebore, Ginger, Clove, Oat straw, Rosemary, Sage, and Thyme. In this informational article titled “Natural Herbs for Depression” we will briefly explore St. Johns wort, Kava, and Ginkgo biloba.

However, before you take either of these herbs or any other supplements, be sure to discuss this with your doctor to make sure they would not cause problems with any other medications you may be taking. The first of these is St. John’s Wort. Anxiety sufferers who have used this Herb have reported that in low doses it actually works within days, but that high doses can cause restlessness.

Kava - Kava is member of the pepper family and is found in the South Pacific. It is popular in Europe, with four European countries approving Kava preparations for the treatment of depression. Kava seems to be most useful in cases of depression with severe anxiety. There are a few side effects linked to Kava and if you are considering this herb you should do some additional research.

There exists a significant problem in taking herbs for anxiety and depression, and other ailments, and that is that unlike other medications government and international drug regulation agencies are not required to test and approve their use. This can mean that drugs could become available that have unforeseen side effects.

However many herbs have been used in medical applications for much longer than their modern chemical counterparts and so there exists a large body of admittedly anecdotal evidence backing their medicinal properties.

The critical point to remember is that there are no guarantees with herbal treatments, and care must be taken to ensure you are not exposing yourself to additional problems and side effects. There is little doubt a herbal substitute for a conventional drug, used in moderation, should provide some relief with less of the addictive dangers associated with prescription meds, but it cannot always be assumed that herbs will be a safer option. Do not assume they are a miracle cure and always take heed of the dosage recommendations.

Finding the best information about natural herbs can be overwhelming at times. One of the best places we found online to get the straight facts is buy muira puama herb

Buy Pau D’arco Bark: Efficient Natural Herbal Products

February 24, 2010

A thousand years ago, the Incas of Peru found the inner bark of the pink-flowered lapacho tree indispensable for treating fever, sore throat, dysentery, snakebite, bladder and yeast infections, and even cancer. They also used its wood to make bows for hunting.

Although preliminary lab tests show that a chemical in pau d’arco called lapachol can kill some viruses, bacteria, and fungi in test tubes, it isn’t known whether it will have the same effects when taken by humans. So even though pau d’arco is sometimes used for conditions ranging from candidiasis (a yeast infection of the vaginal or oral areas), herpes simplex virus, and influenza to parasitic diseases such as schistosomiasis and bacterial infections such as brucellosis, there is no evidence it works. Test tube studies to evaluate whether pau d’arco has any effect on cancer have shown mixed results; and even in studies where pau d’arco does reduce the number of cancer cells, the amounts used would be toxic to humans.

In spite of this negative report, pau d’arco has since been used successfully to treat such things as fevers, arthritis, infections, malaria, skin problems, cancers, and even complications of AIDS. Two reasons for the discrepancy between the research and reality are these.

The pau d’arco tree is an evergreen tree that grows in the warm parts of Central and South America. It is a broad-leaf evergreen that grows to a height of 125 feet and has pink to violet-colored flowers. Its extremely hard wood makes it resistant to disease and decay. The inner bark of the tree is used medicinally. In recent years there has been an increasing demand for pau d’arco and, as a result, the trees are endangered.

Pau d’arco has effectively treated malaria, yeast infections, tuberculosis, strep, and dysentery. Pau d’ arco in small dosages increases immune system activity and in large doses suppresses some immune responses such as inflammation. Its anti-inflammatory work have given pau d’arco promise as a treatment for arthritis, allergies, ulcers, skin problems, and other similar conditions. Add to that list diabetes, flu, lupus, parasites, and skin diseases, and it is easy to see why it was once toted as a ‘wonder drug.’

Pau d’arco is available in health food stores in capsules, tinctures, and as dried bark. The recommended dosage is one to two capsules or one to two droppers of tincture taken one to four times per day, depending on the condition and patient.

Most pau d’arco products are not standardized, so it is not possible to determine whether or not they contain an appropriate amount of these active substances. It is important to carefully read the label to make sure that the product actually contains Tabebuia avellanedae as an ingredient.

Dosage In tablets or capsules, 1 to 4 grams per day in divided doses–or 1 to 2 teaspoons of tincture three times a day. Consuming 1.5 grams per day or more may cause dizziness and GI upset, so consult your herbalist. Avoid pau d’arco if you’re taking anticoagulants or having surgery, or if you are pregnant or nursing.

The gurus hate it when their personal secrets about natural medicine herbs get exposed! Now they’re fuming mad about this site buy pau darco bark and trying to shut it down.

Muira puama is a bush / small tree up to 5 meters in height and produces pungent flowers with a jasmine like fragrance.

The indigenous tribes in Brazil have used the roots and bark internally in a tea as an aphrodisiac, for treating sexual debility and erectile dysfunction, nervous system disorders, neuralgia, baldness, impotency, gastrointestinal disorders, neuromuscular problems and rheumatism.

One reason why there is not yet any firm understanding of the physiological activity of the extract is a fabulously complicated concoction of fatty acids, sterols, essential oils, and other chemicals, and it is not clearly which ones are responsible for its physiological properties.

It is from the Olacaceae family, and the genus is Ptychopetalum (species olacoides) and is also known as Muira Puama, Marapuama, Marapama, Potency Wood and Potenzholz. The bark and roots are used in herbal treatments.

For example, Muira Puama has been extensively studied by the Sexology Institute of Paris, France. A high percentage of participants in scientifically controlled case studies reported that taking Muira Puama extract was highly effective in increasing erectile efficiency and libido.

The action of the muira puama herb is not fully understood but it seems to assist with both the psychological as well as the physical aspect of sexual function.

Muira Puama, one of the primary ingredients in Extagen, has a long history of use in treating sexual dysfunction by indigenous tribes in the Amazon basin. While only a relatively recent discovery in the west, Muira Puama has quickly become one of the top herbal supplements used in the treatment of erectile issues.

Medicinal Mushroom Alcohol Extract vs. Hot Water Extract

January 25, 2010

Medicinal mushrooms have been immensely popular in Asia for millennia. Today, Americans are waking up to these powerful nutraceuticals. In the wake of this new awareness follow issues of product quality claims made by competing brands.

All medicinal mushroom species are plagued by this. Most fiercely debated is red reishi (Ganoderma lucidum), the most popular of all medicinal mushrooms. So this article will primarily focus on that species, but it’s generally applicable to all species of medicinal mushrooms.

An obvious caution is to stay away from cheap, mass-produced reishi. It may be merely dried and pulverized. In order to be medicinal, the mushroom cell-wall has to be broken down. Mass-produced reishi may be mostly inert and ineffective.

But even among the truly effective therapeutic brands, which are plentiful, there are important differences. Each seems to claim superiority over other brands, not surprisingly, because why else would anyone buy them? This article aims to clarify the confusion of conflicting and sometimes misleading information that is out there.

There are primarily three ways to extract the medicinal compounds from red reishi. Each method pulls out different compounds, all of which have been proven by scientific research to be therapeutically important.

1. Water Extraction, Hot (polysaccharides and more)

2. Alcohol Extraction (triterpenoids, etc.)

3. Fermenting (arabinoxylanes, etc.)

Polysaccharides have been shown to possess powerful anti-tumor qualities through enhancing the immune system and by inhibiting blood profusion through tumors. They are also strong antioxidants. [1]

Triterpenoids include a large number of related medicinal compounds whose proven effects include stabilization of blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood clotting. But most importantly, the triterpenoids are the anti-inflammatory compounds of reishi. [1] Inflammation is a serious component in asthma, allergies, arthritis and many more conditions.

And then there are the new and unique medicinal compounds that get created when reishi is fermented. These “secondary metabolites” have their own therapeutic properties, different from the first two groups, including anti-tumor, immune support and blood-sugar balance. [2]

This article is intended to give general guidelines to help you choose an effective reishi product, not to recommend any particular brand. But there are at least two reishi companies on the market which both state only hot water extract is useful while alcohol extracts are of no value.

Naturally, the reason they say so is because they want to sell their own brand. However, those statements are scientifically untrue. Hot water and alcohol extractions both contain critical compounds.

To determine if a brand of reishi (or Ganoderma) contains all the important medicinal compounds from the mushroom, find out if it utilizes both alcohol and hot water extraction. An additional plus would be if it also includes fermented reishi.

As a last point, when you look for the best reishi extract, one thing to look at is the form it comes in. For example, any reishi extract that fully dissolves in a water-based liquid such as coffee probably only contains hot water extracted reishi. So while reishi/ganoderma coffee certainly makes for a superbly delicious and healthy cup loaded with polysaccharides, it won’t include the important anti-inflammatory triterpenoids.

Surprisingly, though, alcohol tinctures may include both hot water extract and alcohol extract. You will know if the alcohol tincture contains polysaccharides because when the alcohol and hot water extracts are blended, the polysaccharides fall out of solution and the tincture becomes cloudy. (Just shake it before you take it.) A cloudy medicinal mushroom tincture is an indication of high polysaccharide content. Capsules and tablets may be either hot water extract or alcohol extract or both.

Discover The Health Benefits Yohimbe Extract

January 11, 2010

Yohimbe extract has been used by West African cultures for generations as a natural treatment. The tree is an evergreen that is native to the Congo, Zaire, Cameroon and Nigeria. In recent decades yohimbe extract has been studied and used in western medicine to treat different health conditions.

In West Africa the bark from the yohimbe tree was used by healers for leprosy, fever, cough as well as an anesthetic. In the 1980s the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the extract for use as a treatment for male impotence and erectile dysfunction. Several human studies have shown conclusively that the alkaloid is effective in many cases for this type of treatment.

Although doctors and researchers do not understand fully why the yohimbe extract works, it is clear that it does indeed work for a number of men who experience impotence. One school of thought is that the extract increases the flow of blood to the penis and can help to support an erection. Other researchers believe that it works by he;ping sexual signals to be communicated through the nervous system more effectively.

Yohimbe natural extract is a successful treatment for erectile dysfunction in around one third of users. It is generally not effective for men who suffer impotence as a result of nerve damage. The extract is also popular as an aphrodisiac and men who take the treatment often find that it can boost sexual stamina as well as giving more intense erections.

As well as being effective in sexual dysfunction in men, the yohimbe extract can also be helpful to women. In both men and women it has shown aphrodisiac powers that heighten libido and can relieve sexual problems that are sometimes caused by taking antidepressants. The extract itself also has some antidepressant qualities. It can be bought as a health supplement or as a prescription medication as well.

Other uses for yohimbe include dry mouth, cholesterol and nervous system related problems. There is evidence that the extract should not be used long term as it can increase blood pressure. Potential side effects include dizziness, shortness of breath, nausea and upset stomach. If you experience any side effects you should stop taking it and consult your doctor or naturopath.

The extract has also been included in some weight loss supplements because it is a stimulant. It increases the heart rate and can also help to burn off fat, prevent the body from storing dietary fat and increase the metabolism. Some athletes use yohimbe because of its stimulant qualities and because it can increase stamina. In some cases it is used in conjunction with other herbal ingredients in body building supplements to increase the intensity of training sessions.

Although this product is both natural and approved by the FDA it should still be taken carefully. If you would like to try it, you are strongly recommended to seek the services of a qualified naturopath who will be able to advise you of the correct dose for your individual condition. Most people take the yohimbe bark extract treatment with no side effects or interactions, but it is always best to err on the side of caution with your health.

To learn more about the Yohimbe extract and how it reacts to your body, you should look to search the Web for more answers. You can learn alot about yohimbe bark and how the extract can help your healthy living.
